Signs Your Time Relay Has Failed

• Cold start issues. The engine won't start in cold weather because the glow plugs aren't staying on long enough — or aren't turning on at all.
• Burned-out glow plugs. If the relay gets stuck in the 'on' position, it keeps feeding power to the glow plugs. They burn out fast.
• Starter grinding. A failed safety delay relay might let the starter engage while the engine is already running. That can cause serious gear damage.
• No click, no delay. Turn the key to preheat and hear nothing? The relay coil or internal timer circuit is probably dead.
